SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT HAIR COMBS

Did you know that the world’s most celebrated comb was carved in eastern Siberia during the eighteenth century out of ivory from an extinct mammoth species? or before the nineteenth century decorative combs were the most valuable jewels in China and Japan? or the most valuable comb in the world was found in the tomb of a Scythian leader near the Black Sea? Dating from the fifth century B.C., the comb is made of ten ounces of pure gold.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF HAIR COMBS
Have you ever thought about, while combing your hair, who invented the hair comb or when was the first comb made? You will be surprised to know that the history or use of hair combs dates as 5,000 years ago! Combs are actually among the oldest tools found by archaeologists. As early as 5500 B.C. the ancient Egyptians carved out combs among other remnants of the emerging cultures. Similarly in China, combs were worn as hair accessories that reflected one’s social status. However, historians have no way to know who the inventor of the first comb was. Archaeologists have found combs in settlements from 5,000 years ago in Persia. Hair combs are used by humans to separate tangled hairs, to keep their hair clean and to style their hair. They are also used as a decoration for hair.

Apart from using combs to part hair for coloring, conditioning and braiding, people especially in early times have also worn combs as decorative hair accessories that hold hair in a specific style. During the 1930s and 1940s, when hair updos were in the fashion, the decorative hair comb became a popular accessory. The need or idea to invent combs, certainly, would have arisen from the need to keep the hair in order, neat, and with a tidy appearance, and in few cases with the intention of keeping the head free of lice and other parasites. The various designs and shapes of combs, from rudimentary prehistoric combs to the elaborated designs of middle Ages and further centuries, are testimonials of how people concerned about hair styles' appearance.

EVOLUTION OF HAIR COMBS

It was during the Middle Ages (14th century) that the comb underwent its main development. At this time, a new instrument came to be used for making combs, known as comb-maker. Combs made of wood or bone that came from either deer or moose horn began to be made, using the comb-maker. Tortoise shell and horn were the common materials used to make comb in the early to mid-19th century. An advantage of using tortoise shell and horn was that these materials could be heated to become soft and moldable. As they hardened, they would retain their new shape. The feathers from Chinese Kingfisher were also used for designing the combs at one point of time.

During the late-19th century, two brothers, Isaiah and John Hyatt, in the quest for finding an alternative to ivory, conducted an experiment.

They developed a plastic material called celluloid, using nitro-cellulose and camphor as primary ingredients. Celluloid can be credited for changing the history of combs significantly, as it came to be increasingly used for making combs. They could now be made fast and with very less expenditure. This led to the formation of a whole new comb industry. Celluloid surfaced at the right time, as tortoise shell and ivory were becoming increasingly expensive to avail. In 1993, the Antique Comb Collectors Club was formed to collect vintage combs, which boasts of a fascinating collection of centuries old combs. Today, combs are used all over the world, for the purpose of grooming hair.

TYPES OF MATERIALS USED FOR HAIR COMBS

A wide variety of materials are used for making combs in different shapes, forms and sizes. Some of the common materials used to make a comb such as plastic, bones, metals, horns and wood. Plastic combs are very common in the market and are also less expensive. To make bone combs, bones of different animals are used and hence such combs are very expensive. Combs made from metals are smooth and water-resistant and are used mainly for styling and cutting hair. Horn combs are made up of keratin and animal horns and are very expensive. Wooden combs are made from different types of wood like boxwood and cherry and keeping these combs can be a tough job.

Plastic Hair Comb
Cheap. Versatile. Long lasting. The plastic comb became the primary comb manufactured and used around the world. Wooden combs became more of a specialty item as the "plastic revolution" took the world by storm. However, plastic combs are not the best for your beard. They produce static electricity as you comb your beard, causing it to become more entangled. Plastic combs are mold pressed, which in the manufacturing process, leaves microscopic "burs" in between the teeth which snag and pull your beard hairs. Ever wonder why you're getting more ingrown beard hairs? There's one reason why.

Hair Combs Made of Bones
These types of combs are made with bones of animals, but there are other better and safer materials in the market that are an alternative to combs made of animal bones. Besides, they are available in different varieties and are inexpensive.

Metal Hair Combs
Metal combs are todays "hip" things to have. No, we are not saying they are "hipster", as that word truly has no meaning in the beard world. We are meaning they are the cool thing to have. Sure, they look incredible, and the designs people make from them are stellar. But just as the plastic comb, they are not the best for your beard. Unless the metal is polished in between the teeth, they will, as plastic does, snag and pull your beard hairs out more often than a wooden comb will. They also tend to wipe the natural oils or beard oil away from the beard hairs since metal is a non-porous material and very hard.

Wooden Hair Comb
Ah, the moment you've been waiting for. The wooden hair comb. Here is where the rubber meets the road. As stated above, wooden combs have been used for centuries. Wood is one of the most versatile materials on the planet. A good wooden comb can be made from a variety of wood types. We believe that neem wood is the best option for a hair comb. Neem is a very beneficial wood. Neem Wood allows the natural oils flow in your hair, and to be more evenly distributed. Here some other benefits of using a wooden comb:

It minimises dandruff
Dandruff is generally the effect of a dry and dehydrated scalp and trust me! the plastic comb you are using just maximises that dryness. It leads to flakiness that ultimately snatches your sleep. Using wooden comb won’t just prevent your scalp from over-drying but will also evenly distribute the oils all over the scalp and make it nourished.

It detangles easily
Is your hair curly? Well, I know your pain of detangling your hair as mine one is curly too! It takes a hell lot of time and patience to detangle the day you wash your hair and the end result is hair fall. But not anymore! Wooden combs can help you get the easiest detangled hair in just a flick.

It removes frizziness
Plastic hair combs are the primary cause for your rough and frizzy hair as they are totally artificial and do nothing for your hair. They are so widespread that it is practically impossible to remove the habit but a good habit of brushing your hair can lead to a good hair day!

It aids longer hair
A healthy scalp leads to long and strong hair. As wooden hair combs increases blood circulation throughout the scalp, it becomes easy for the hair follicles to get enough vital nutrients. Moreover, the secretion of sebum is regulated and the impurities are completely eliminated from the hair, which also stimulates the growth of our locks.

It gives no dryness or greasiness
Yes, you do not face any sort of dryness or greasiness on your scalp while using wooden combs or brushes. These tools keep our hair soft by conditioning it naturally, while prevents the scalp from getting oily by putting a stop to the over-secretion of sebum.

It has no static electricity
When you use a plastic comb or brush, a static electricity is produced in your hair. It speeds up the reduction of energy of the hair to the brain. But being an insulator, wood cannot conduct electricity. Hence, using wooden combs or brushes can help you stay away from the damages resulted from static.

It balances internal health
As per ancient beliefs and studies, the head is perceived to be the point where all the internal energy converges. According to the study of chakras, this is where energy can turn good or bad and can in turn affect overall health. The head is where all the medians of the body come together, and combing it regularly can maintain the balance of internal and external energies which lead to good health and protection against stress, mental health issue and other internal problems.

It removes tiredness and fatigue
Combing your scalp with strong and long movements from the front of the scalp to the back, and then from side to side is a technique that can remove tiredness from the body and mind. This massaging action using a comb helps to re energise the body and calm the mind. Hence it is recommended that you comb your hair 100 times before bed so that you can sleep better.

It nourishes the hair
The scalp produces some naturally occurring oils which hydrate and nourish the hair roots. But if this oil stays on the scalp it can attract dust and pollution making your hair look flat and lifeless. Instead, if you run a wooden comb along your scalp and through the length of hair, it helps to evenly distribute the oil without making the hair look dull. The distribution of oil adds a lustrous shine and gives the nourishment to help hair grow.

It gives lesser allergies
The natural components of wooden combs and brushes make them hypoallergenic. Some of them even come with a protective coating. So, you have lesser chances to develop severe allergies on your scalp.

How to Keep it Wooden Comb Clean?
Like any other combs, wooden hair combs too must be kept clean so you don’t transfer the grease back into your hair.

Every time you wash your hair, take your hair comb along with you and give it a wash as well. You can use some soap and warm water to clean it. If it’s greasy or dirty, use an old toothbrush to scrub it gently.

A well crafted wooden comb has an attractive appearance. Hence, they are a must accessory to keep with you.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF HAIR COMBS FOR STYLING

Many of us tend to use the combs our family or friends have introduced us to, not giving a thought to how different our hair may be from theirs. Along the way we may find different brushes that feel better on our scalps or do a better job of getting the tangles out of our hair, but did you ever wonder why there are so many brushes available in the first place?

The fact is, using the right comb for your hair type (whether beard, curly or thick) and texture is essential for better hair care and styling. Especially if you want to prevent breakage, get great style, reduce frizz, and generally keep your hair looking healthy and beautiful. Here are the different types of combs for styling;

Wide Tooth Hair Comb
Some comb designs have wide teeth and some have fine. Wide teeth are best for getting out tangles. This often happens when you first get up in the morning. However, if you are going for the bedhead look, be careful. You may not want to do anything with your hairstyle in the morning.

Fine Tooth Tail Comb
This type of comb is also known as rat tail comb. It is like a normal comb with the only difference of a long, pointed tail coming off from one end. A fine tooth tail comb is perfect for combing straight, short and fine hair. It must not be used for combing very thick, curly or frizzy hair as it can cause hair fall or hair loss. Men prefer to use this type of comb to keep their hair in place. The fine and narrow teeth of this comb can be used for both styling and parting hair.

Rat Tail Comb
Many men may think that the rat tail is simply a comb with a handle. This is not the case. The rat tail is used to help get parts straight. Maybe you want a part down the middle or to one side. Use the handle portion of the “rat tail” to run across the area you wish to part.

Picks Comb
This type of comb is generally used for lifting the hair away from the head. People often used it as a hair clip also. This comb adds volume to hair and is perfectly shaped for styling and parting hair. It should be used by those having very thin hair and looking for ways to make their hair bouncy and look different.

Barber Hair Comb
Most men have seen barber combs and are familiar with their use. They allow the barber to cut and trim without getting too close to the head. It is similar to guards that are on electric clippers. These combs are tapered to provide a lot of different options.

Rake Comb
It is a kind of wide toothed comb that looks like a garden rake. The comb fits well on the palm and is very using for removing knots and tangles from long hair. This wide toothed comb passes through the hair smoothing causing minimal pain and loss. It is very handy on a bad hair day.

Pocket Hair Comb
The pocket comb is a very handy tool and usually has one side with much finer teeth. It serves a lot of purposes. Most men are familiar with this kind of tool, and not much else needs to be said.

Teasing Hair Comb
This type of comb is used for giving some extra texture and volume to hair. You can find a teasing comb having one or more rows with varying length of teeth. The handle of the comb is similar to a rat tail comb. It is perfect for those having very long, thin and wavy hair. Use this comb to backcomb and tease hair to make a chignon or a hot looking bun.

All-Purpose Hair Comb
You may see something that resembles a pocket comb but is much larger. These are usually called all-purpose combs. These are very sturdy tools that work well for many things. However, due to their size, they are best left at home.

In conclusion, there is a wide variety of hair combs available in different shapes, sizes and materials. Each type of hair comb is designed keeping in mind different functionalities. So, next time when you go for shopping a comb be specific about what type of comb you need for your hair.
